Not only that, Comvita regularly supplies hospitals with medical grade manuka honey for medicinal use.
In this review, we take a look at Comvita and what makes this particular honey so impressive.
Who is Comvita?
Comvita is a New Zealand based honey producer who has been producing premium manuka honey since 1974. Claude Stratford and Alan Bougen began the company with a vision of improving people’s health with the product of the bee. The company has grown to become one of the leading manuka honey producers in the world.
Comvita manufactures and exports a wide range of natural healthcare products. In addition to manuka honey, they produce a full range of products to promote digestive health, treat eczema, increase energy, boost immunity and improve heart health. Within the Comvita range you'll find everything from moisturizers to toothpaste.
The name of the company comes from the Latin ‘Com Vita’ which means ‘with life and vitality.’ From the very start, the company has been committed to ethical practices and 100 percent purity of product.
Comvita is headquartered at Paengaroa, located in the Bay of Plenty area of New Zealand’s north island. On the six hectare property they have recently planted 40,000 native trees as part of their commitment to leaving the planet better than they found it.
The 40,000 hives that Comvita operate are located in the most manuka bush abundant areas of the entire world. That allows the company to produce what is among the best monofloral honey on the planet.
Comvita is also a listed company on New Zealand's sharemarket (NZE:CVT), adding another level of credibility to their product range. Not only are they answerable to customers, their business practices are also scrutinized by shareholders and fair trading regulators in New Zealand, ensuring their operations are all in line with industry regulations.

It has a greater level of color and intensity than many competing honeys. The smoothness of the honey is excellent, allowing it to be easily spread. A large number of online reviewers have mentioned the great taste, with one mentioning that it does not have the medicinal taste of other manuka honeys.
value for money

The reason is that a UMF 20+ Manuka Honey is the premium grade that you can buy. It offers many medicinal benefits that you cannot get with the lower UMF rated products. Why is Comvita Honey so expensive?
Comvita honey is so expensive because it is much more expensive and labor intensive to harvest manuka honey than other types of honey. Manuka honey comes from bees that almost exclusively pollinate the manuka bush. The manuka bush only has a very short flowering period of between 2-6 weeks. That means that the bees have a very short window of time to select the nectar. According to the Comvita website, it will require around 22,700 trips to the manuka plant to collect enough nectar for one container of Comvita.
Another factor that pushes up the cost of manuka honey is that the Manuka bush only grows in certain, largely remote parts of New Zealand. The rule to get the best quality honey is that the further away from civilization the manuka is growing, the better quality it will be. As a result, Comvita travels to the most remote parts of New Zealand to collect their honey.
Finally, the higher UMF Comvita manuka honeys are far more medicinally beneficial than the lower priced ones. For example, Comvita UMF 20+ manuka honey has more than 10 times the level of Methylglyoxal that you will find in the Comvita UMF 5+ product.
