manuka doctor MANUKA HONEY

MGO 225+

Manuka Doctor is a New Zealand producer and retailer of Manuka honey. The privately owned company traces its roots back to 1901. It is one of the main exporters of genuine manuka honey from New Zealand, selling their product all over the world. Manuka Doctor do not grade their manuka honey graded according to the UMF grading system. Instead, they use the MGO rating system. Each jar of manuka honey they sell also carries the Tested Certified Sticker of the New Zealand Government.

Manuka Doctor also sells a popular range of skincare products that are based around manuka honey.

Who is manuka doctor?

Manuka Doctor is a New Zealand based family owned company that specializes in selling pure, New Zealand manuka honey. The company is based in Auckland, at the top of New Zealand’s North Island. They oversee 60,000 bee hives spread across both the North and South Islands of New Zealand. All 11,000 hectares in which those beehives are situated is owned by the company.

Manuka Doctor pride themselves on the ability to trace every single jar of manuka honey that they sell back to the beehive where it was sourced. Every pot is packed and sealed in New Zealand before being exported overseas. Every jar of Manuka Doctor honey also carries the genuine New Zealand FernMark Logo. To carry the FernMark logo, a company must demonstrate that it reflects the essence of New Zealand by being registered and compliant with all New Zealand laws and relevant regulations and that it has a substantial level of New Zealand ownership, governance, and full time employees.

Manuka Doctor sells a range of MGO manuka honeys as well as a number that are based on the BioActivity of the honey.

In 2011, Manuka Doctor launched the world’s first award winning purified bee venom. They also launched a high performance manuka skincare range. None of Manuka Doctor’s skincare products have been tested on animals.

Product overview:

Manuka Doctor MGO 225 Manuka Honey is an 8.75 oz jar of manuka honey that is sourced, packaged and sealed in New Zealand. It is certified by the New Zealand government and is one of the best priced genuine New Zealand manuka honey products on the market. Unlike the majority of manuka honeys produced in New Zealand, Manuka Doctor is not graded by Unique Manuka Factor (UMF). Manuka Doctor is not a member of the UMFNZ. Instead it uses the MGO rating.

Manuka Doctor MGO 225 is sold in a dark tinted plastic jar. This shades the honey inside from the sun’s rays, which has the potential to deteriorate the quality of the manuka. The honey pot is BPA free.

Manuka Doctor MGO 225 is not rated as raw manuka honey. That is because the processing and extraction involves temperatures in excess of 118 degrees. When exposed to temperatures over 118 degrees, the enzymes and antioxidants in the honey begin to break down. That potentially diminishes the effectiveness of the manuka honey.

This manuka honey product is fully traceable from the hive to your home. This provides you with further assurance that the manuka honey you are buying is genuine, New Zealand derived manuka honey. This is important when you consider that many honeys that are sold internationally as genuine New Zealand manuka are fake!

Manuka Doctor MGO 225 manuka honey is a monofloral honey. Monofloral honey is predominantly produced by bees that collect their nectar from the manuka bush. In order to be classified as monofloral, a manuka honey must meet a higher level of two of the four occurring markers. It must also meet a pollen test.

Manuka Doctor also sells some multiflora manuka honeys. In this case, the bees source their nectar from other sources in addition to the manuka bush. However, in order to be classified as multifloral, the main source of the nectar must be manuka.

Grading

There are two different grading systems used to indicate the antibacterial strength of manuka honey - UMF and MGO. UMF is an internationally registered trademark. It can only be used by honey producers who meet set auditing and monitoring criteria designed to ensure that the honey is genuine, unadulterated New Zealand manuka. UMF, which stands for Unique Manuka Factor, is more established and widely used than MGO.

MGO is a measure of the level of methylglyoxal in the honey. This compound is the key chemical responsible for manuka honey’s naticbacterial power However, it does not cause manuka’s non peroxide activity. The higher the level of MGO in the product, the greater the antibacterial power of the honey.

Manuka Doctor do not use the UMF grading system, relying instead on the MGO number. It is possible, however, to draw a correlation between MGO numbers and UMF grading levels. Here is an overview of that comparison:

  • UMF 5+ = MGO 83
  • UMF 10+ = MGO 263
  • UMF 15+ = MGO 514
  • UMF 18+ = MGO 696
  • UMF 20+ = MGO 829

With an MGO of 225, this particular manuka honey sits between a UMF 5 and 10 rating. To be beneficial for medical applications, a manuka honey should have a minimum UMF rating of 10. That means that Manuka Doctor MGO 225 manuka honey does not contain the antibacterial potency to have any real medicinal benefit.

Who are we?

I'm Erin, and my husband and I have been raising bees in Northern New Zealand for over 30 years. We no longer raise bees on Manuka flowers, but it remains one of our favorites, and we eat it daily, among other honeys like Kamahi and Rata. Since Manuka has grown in popularity overseas in recent years, we thought we should educate people on the true benefits of Manuka and how to find quality Manuka honey. Above is our guide, written by us and designed by our brilliant computer whiz of a son, Byron. We hope you find it helpful! Learn more about us here.
