UMF 10+

Mother Earth is a well established New Zealand brand who produce a range of popular muesli and snack bars. They also sell manuka and multifloral honey worldwide in 250 and 500 gram containers. Having positioned themselves as New Zealand’s favorite snack bar seller, Mother Earth is also establishing a fine reputation with their creamy, tasty manuka honey products.

Who is mother earth?

Mother Earth is a part of ProLife Foods, which is a New Zealand health and nutrition company. ProLife was started by Bernie and Kay Crosbie in the 1980s from a kitchen table with a pair of scales (borrowed) that they used to repackage nuts. Since then they have become the largest importer and roaster of nuts in New Zealand.

Mother Earth was started by two guys who were passionate about natural foods on the New Zealand South Island’s Waiheke Island in 1974. Mother Earth joined ProLife Foods in 2008. For 30 years they have built their business around nuts. Their nut range includes some of the most popular peanut butters in New Zealand.

Mother Earth is very big in the nut bar and muesli bars industry. In 2018 they were voted as New Zealand’s favorite snack bar. Mother Earth also has an extensive range of honey products. They work with experienced beekeepers who run 6,500 hives with 3.25 million bees producing some of the most popular honey sold in New Zealand. These hives are spread across the upper part of New Zealand’s North Island.

All Manuka Honey produced by Mother Earth is independently tested in registered labs to assess its key markers.

Product overview:

Mother Earth produces a range of UMF grade Manuka honeys from 5+ to 15+. Their UMF10+ manuka honey represents the mid range in terms of manuka honey potency. It is available in both a 250 gram and a 500 gram plastic tinted container. The tinting of the container protects the valuable manuka from sun degradation.

With a recommended serving size of 5 grams, you will be able to get 50 servings from a 250 gram container. Mother Earth produces a rich, creamy honey as the result of their creaming process, which involves multiple days of churning until the crystals become firm.

Every single jar of Mother Earth UMF10+ Manuka Honey is sourced, packed and sealed in New Zealand. The beehives are placed strategically near some of the North Island’s prime manuka bush growing areas during the 2-6 week manuka flowering season to ensure that the bees collect their nectar only from manuka bushes.

Mother Earth owns all of its own beehives.

Grading

Mother Earth Manuka Honey is UMF graded in accordance with the grading system of the New Zealand Honey Association. UMF stands for Unique Manuka Factor and is the key way that you are able to determine how potent the manuka honey is in terms of its medical application.

There are two parts to the UMF grading system. The first is a label that claims that the product is genuine manuka honey. The second is a label that gives the UMF Grading number. The UMF grade is a combination of the following key markers:

  • Leptosperin
  • DHA
  • Methylglyoxal

The UMF rating system compares the antibacterial quality of the manuka honey product with a well known disinfectant called Phenol. That means that a product like Mother Earth UMF 10+ Manuka Honey has the equivalent antibacterial potency as a 20% solution of phenol.

The UMF rating system goes from 5+ right the way through to 24+. Most experts state that you need at least a 10+ UMF rating for the product to be able to deliver any appreciable health and medicinal benefits. This puts this particular Mother Earth manuka honey at the lowest end of the scale in terms of its medicinal benefits.

Manuka Honey with a UMF of between 10+ and 14+ is classified as Active Manuka Honey and is said to provide mild therapeutic benefits.

Mother Earth also has the MGO levels of their manuka honeys independently tested. MGO stands for methylglyoxal, which is the main antibacterial component of the honey and what makes manuka so special and unique.

Taste

Mother Earth Manuka Honey has a more liquid constituency than many of its competitors. The taste is sweet and flavorsome, with a number of online reviewers claiming that it is the best manuka honey they have ever tasted. The general color of this manuka honey is light amber, though every batch produced may have a slightly different color and texture.

value for money

UMF rated Manuka Honeys are more expensive because of their medicinal benefits. The higher the rating, the more expensive the product will be. So, in order to judge oranges with oranges, you need to compare this UMF 10+ product with other UMF 10+ manuka honeys sold by other companies. When you do so, you find that Mother Earth sits at around the midpoint of the market. It is not as expensive as Comvita or Manukora.

suggested uses and benefits:

Mother Earth UMF 10+ Manuka Honey makes for a tasty, creamy food. Enjoy it directly from the container, as a spread on your toast or sandwiches and as a natural sweetener for your beverages. You can also use this honey as a natural, healthy replacement for sugars and sweeteners in your favorite baking recipes.

Mother Earth 10+ Manuka Honey is considered to be an active medicinal agent. While clearly not as potent as the company’s UMF 15+ product, it still contains the antibacterial compounds to help you with a whole range of complaints. It is able to help with wound healing, promote oral health to prevent tooth decay and ease a sore throat. Manuka honey is able to actually line the throat in order to protect it. It can also help to prevent gastric ulcers.

If you suffer from digestive problems such as acid reflux, gas and bloating then manuka honey can also bring you relief. It can also be used topically to treat a range of skin disorders including acne.

Manuka honey is safe for the vast majority of people. It should not, however, be used by children under the age of 12 months. That is because there is a possibility that it may cause infant botulism.
