Wedderspoon is one of the most popular Manuka honeys on the market. The company has a base in New Zealand’s South Island and sources their honey from the stunning Lake Wakatipu region. Wedderspoon, however, does not use the UMF rating system which has been put in place by the NZ Honey Association as the international standard for manuka antibacterial quality. The bottom line is that their honey, though cheaper than most other manukas on the market, does not guarantee the Non-Peroxide Activity (NPA), which is the key to its health and medicinal benefits.

Who is wedderspoon?

Wedderspoon KFactor 16 Manuka Honey is one of two manuka honeys sold by the company, the other being KFactor 12. That puts it at the top of their KFactor rating system. This is a pure, natural and raw manuka honey.

Wedderspoon KFactor 16 Manuka Honey is the only monofloral honey that the company sells. That means that the bees that the pollen comes from have exclusively pollinated manuka bushes.

Grading

As mentioned, the universally accepted standard grading system to assess the antibacterial quality of manuka honey is the UMF Rating. UMF stands for Unique Manuka Factor and measures the content of the following 3 key antibacterial ingredients:

  • DHA
  • Methylglyoxal

The final UMF rating compares the antibacterial strength of the honey to the established antibacterial agent phenol. So, a UNF 20+ rated manuka honey will give you the same antibacterial strength as a 20% solution of phenol.

Wedderspoon do not use the UMF rating system. At first glance their KFactor rating system may look like the UMF grading but there is a fundamental difference; the KFactor system does not take into account the non-peroxide activity (NPA) of the honey. This is critical in determining the antibacterial quality of the honey. The KFactor rating measures how pure the honey is. A KFactor of 16 indicates that  at least 75% of the honey in the product has been created from pollen that has come from the manuka bush. Wedderspoon K16 Manuka honey is a monofloral honey, meaning that the pollen is only sourced from bees that have fed on manuka bushes.

 It should be noted that the KFactor rating is recognized by the New Zealand governments Ministry for Primary Industries. This rating takes into account 5 key factors when rating manuka honey.
